Karl Lagerfeld is back in front of the camera again — but this time it’s not for a fashion brand or even a random home appliance company. It’s for Volkswagen. Yay, Volkswagen!
WWD reports the overstretched designer with the incomprehensible work ethic flew to Berlin last week to film a series of 30 second spots for the car company. He plays himself (because who else could he possibly play?) as a photographer (because that’s what he does) snapping photos of various makes and models of VWs as though he was a paparazzo snapping Taylor Momsen on her way out of a sketchy venue.
The commercials were directed by Johan Renck, the guy who brought us the artistic masterpiece that was Madonna’s music video for “Hung Up.” And Matthias Becker, Volkswagen’s marketing guru noted that Lagerfeld was like a fish in water in front of the lens. Of course, any German citizen who would dare say otherwise about the Kaiser is probably in danger of losing their job. But we believe that Becker was telling the truth.
The ads will pop up in Germany on Dec. 22 (with a coordinating print campaign to follow soon after). We’ll be on the lookout for them on YouTube come Christmas.
