FLASHBACK: Carine Roitfeld’s Very First Issue of Vogue Paris

Earlier today, Carine Roitfeld revealed she’s stepping down as editor in chief of Vogue Paris, effective January. And while she spoke to Cathy Horyn about her plans for the future — which is to say, she apparently has none — we can’t help but take a look back. January marks Roitfeld’s 10th year editing the French glossy, which makes February 2001 her very first issue. Let’s take a look.
A platinum blonde Kate Moss was the issue’s cover star, with the center spread shot by Mario Testino. Titled “Noir Blanc” — or Black White, in English — the editorial was styled by Roitfeld and features Moss and model Delfine Bafo in minimalist black and white ensembles.
The fact that ten years later the spread still feels modern and, more importantly, relevant is a testament to Roitfeld’s skill. As the editrix once told her daughter Julia, “Don’t follow the trends too much — they change too fast.”
