CONFIRMED: Karl Will Be Doing A Capsule Collection For Macy’s

Karl Lagerfeld would be selling his rumored “masstige” line at Macy’s. UnBeige got the delicious scoop, and it sounded super-legit. Today Macy’s confirmed the rumor, but the collaboration entails something a bit different from what we initially hoped for. Karl is indeed teaming up with Macy’s — but only for a limited edition capsule collection.
Next year Macy’s is launching a new initiative that will rotate one-off designer capsule collections every two months. Karl is taking part, and while this is all well and good, it is basically the same thing he did for H&M six years ago. We suppose the difference is that the collection will be sold in 250 stores (10 times the number of stores H&M sold its most recent collab in) and online, but then it’s more like… well, Target. Nothing revolutionary there, though we’re obviously excited for some lower-priced Karl.
Said Macy’s CEO Terry Lundgren: “Karl Lagerfeld holds a unique place in the world of fashion, an icon who is the ultimate modernist. Through the decades, his style and vision have marked the history of design. It is a tremendous honor to bring his inimitable perspective to our fashion customer.”
Sources tell WWD that “although the Macy’s collection would not constitute masstige, it does indicate the designer’s determination to branch out into the lower-priced arena.” Sure, but isn’t that what his H&M collection indicated? Anyway, it sounds like Karl’s actual masstige plans are (thankfully) something separate from his Macy’s project, and that his full-range masstige line could be rolled out as soon as fall 2011. Details to follow, we hope!
